Yesterday we received a paper letter by snail-mail with the following contents:

Dear whoever-you-are,

Hereby I demand that you stop using OpenWack name for your pack of ones and zeros because I intended to use it
for my super-secret project since I was a boy!

You know it’s a movie about a poor boy who became a hero and started completing impossible missions on weekends and fight Martians on Wednesdays. Oh wait, it’s super-secret! Forget what you’ve just read, right now!

Anyways, if you don’t obey I’ll sue your sorry asses out of existence.

Yours magnificently,
Tom Cruise

You see, the letter sounds suspiciously real to dismiss it like that. “Oh my #$%@#^$ #$#$^!”, we thought. “Now we have to #$%#$^#$ because some #$%#$&#$^ wants to #$%@#$$ and $^#@&$%. Or maybe we should #$%#$#?”

First we started composing reply but since we didn’t actually write anything by hand since second grade we decided it was easier to get our shit together and finally release something under whatever name, boy was that a long sentence!

Anyways, OpenWack is now Oxwall. Hold your breath.

Another hosted public beta – WackWall

WackWall Not that it’s a big deal but we unleashed hosted public beta into WackWall, too.

It’s an almost 50,000 webmaster accounts strong audience that’s been a little stale since we didn’t have much updates for the first version of WackWall. So we just released WackWall 2 on the new OpenWack platform in hope it’s going to heat things up.

If you are waiting to download OpenWack feel free to create a social network on WackWall to find out if this early feature-stripped build is for you.

We start iterating from here developing new features (most essential ones first) and of course fixing ongoing problems. The platform needs to mature and coding standards for plugins must be set by the core team. Also we will start working on OpenWack developer community infrastructure to get ready to release OpenWack as open source community software.

Wait for the downloadable version of what you see on WackWall some time around May. Don’t take that as a promise though, I’ll deny everything if needed. Honestly we really hope to release this thing in spring. It’s still going to be version 1.0 but really tested out and full-featured. This process has already been started.

Keep your fingers, toes, and eyes crossed.

Yes. We promised it to come much earlier and even now it doesn’t come in full. Namely we have a fully functional sneak peek for you.

OpenWack 1.0 platform is available for preview and testing at Xitti Adult Social Network Builder. Xitti is the adult version of WackWall and both services will be powered by OpenWack platform in terms of SaaS.

Currently we are fixing all those minor shortcomings you will inevitably encounter and working on new features for real, downloadable release in Spring ‘10. You might also notice that this release introduces only one theme, although fully customizable with CSS, graphics and comprehensive customization controls. Other themes are on their way.

This release comes as the public beta and we would like you to test it and weigh in with your opinion and feedback. Suggestions are welcome here.
